WhatsApp number requirements
También llamado: WhatsApp number, eligibility, business verification
This page gathers, as a quick reference, the technical requirements, the possible statuses and the messaging limits that apply when you connect a WhatsApp Business number in Nevent. The limit and eligibility data come from Meta’s official documentation for the WhatsApp Business Platform.
Number requirements
Section titled “Number requirements”| Requirement | Detail |
|---|---|
| Number type | With country and area code (short codes are not accepted). It can be a mobile or a landline. |
| Ownership | The number must belong to you or your business. |
| Ability to receive | It must be able to receive voice calls or SMS, to complete verification. |
| Previous use on WhatsApp | It cannot be registered at that moment in the WhatsApp app or the WhatsApp Business app, unless you turn on coexistence (see below) or delete that app’s account first. |
| Verification | By SMS or by voice call. Landlines can only be verified by voice call. |
| Numbers per account | 2 numbers to start with. It rises automatically to 20 when the business is verified or when a number reaches a messaging tier of 2,000 conversations. |
Coexistence: a number shared between the app and the API
Section titled “Coexistence: a number shared between the app and the API”Meta lets you use the same phone number at the same time in the WhatsApp Business app (for manual, one-to-one conversations) and on the API Nevent uses (for campaigns and automations). Messages from both channels stay in sync in the history.
Some points to keep in mind:
- It requires a recent version of the WhatsApp Business app (2.24.17 or later).
- A number in coexistence has a fixed technical sending limit of 20 messages per second, to keep compatibility with the app.
- Messages sent from the app are still free. Messages sent through the API (those of your Nevent campaigns) are billed at Meta’s rates.
- Coexistence for your account is turned on by the Nevent support team.
For a complete explanation of what is kept, which requirements apply and when it suits you or not, see What WhatsApp coexistence mode is and when it suits you.
Account and number statuses in Meta
Section titled “Account and number statuses in Meta”| Status | Where you see it | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Business verified | Business Manager > Business verification | Meta has checked your business’s legal identity. It is a requirement to raise the number quota and for some eligibilities. |
| Business in review / rejected / not started | Business Manager > Business verification | Verification has not been completed yet or Meta has rejected it. Check the documents you provided. |
| Display name approved / pending / rejected | WhatsApp Manager > Business profiles | Shows whether the name your contacts will see as the sender can already be used. |
| Number connected (Connected) | WhatsApp Manager > Phone numbers | The number is active and can send and receive messages through the API. |
| Number quality: green (GREEN) | WhatsApp Manager > Phone numbers | High quality: few or no negative signals from users. |
| Number quality: yellow (YELLOW) | WhatsApp Manager > Phone numbers | Medium quality: it has received negative signals or a low read rate; it may end up paused if it does not improve. |
| Number quality: red (RED) | WhatsApp Manager > Phone numbers | Low quality: high risk that Meta lowers your messaging limit. |
| Number quality: no data (NA / UNKNOWN) | WhatsApp Manager > Phone numbers | There are not enough sends or user signals yet to calculate the quality. |
Messaging tiers (Meta)
Section titled “Messaging tiers (Meta)”The messaging tier is the maximum number of unique recipients you can message outside a conversation opened by the user, in a rolling 24-hour window. It is calculated per business account (business portfolio), not per number: if you have several numbers in the same account, they share the same quota.
| Tier | Unique recipients in 24 h | How you reach it |
|---|---|---|
| Initial | 250 | The starting tier of every new account. |
| Expanded | 2,000 | By verifying the business, having a partner verify it, or sending 2,000 messages delivered to unique recipients in a rolling 30-day window with high-quality templates. |
| Higher | 10,000 | Automatic upgrade by Meta if you keep high quality and use at least half of your current quota in the last 7 days. |
| High volume | 100,000 | Automatic upgrade by Meta with the same quality and usage criteria. |
| Unlimited | Unlimited | Automatic upgrade for accounts with a sustained history of high quality and volume. |

How each message is billed
Section titled “How each message is billed”| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| What is billed | Since July 1, 2025, Meta charges per message, not per conversation: each template message you send is billed at Meta’s rate for the recipient’s country and the template’s category (marketing, utility or authentication). Free-form replies inside the 24-hour customer service window are service messages: from October 1, 2026, each number gets 1,000 free per month and the rest are charged. |
| Cost in Nevent | WhatsApp does not use credits at a flat rate like SMS or email. It is billed at Meta’s per-message rates, not with the plan’s credits. For the credits included in your plan, ask the Nevent team. |
